Keep the page and files together.
The output can be opened locally or served by an ordinary static web server.
Local use
Generate the page inside the directory you want to browse, then open it in a browser. Local file handling varies between browsers and operating systems, so check the links in the browser you intend to use.
Sharing a folder
Send the generated page with its referenced files, keeping the directory layout intact. An HTML index by itself does not contain the listed documents.
Publishing on a website
- Choose a dedicated folder containing only material intended for publication.
- Generate an index inside that folder.
- Review every filename and open every link.
- Upload the folder to a static web host you control.
- Check the public page and a deliberately missing URL.
Missing files
If a listed file is renamed or removed, regenerate the index. The utility does not monitor changes. A missing resource should return an ordinary 404 response from the web server.
Search engines and access
Leaving a file out of the index is not access control. Anyone who knows a public file URL may still request it. A robots.txt rule also does not provide authentication.
Server-side behavior—TLS, response headers, caching, and permissions—is configured by your host, not by the generated HTML.
